Υdna, the renowned diver...
According to Pausanias (10.19.1), before the Battle of Artemisium Ydna and her father Scyllias volunteered to help the Greeks by cutting the anchors of the Persian ships. As a result, the fleet drifted, many vessels were damaged, and the Greeks gained precious time to prepare, which contributed to their victories.
Ydna, trained from childhood in swimming and diving, was famed for her skill in the sea. Herodotus also notes that Scyllias had initially worked as a diver for the Persians but eventually defected, bringing vital intelligence to the Greeks.
In gratitude for their bravery, the Amphictyons dedicated statues of Ydna and Scyllias at Delphi, which were later taken to Rome by Emperor Nero.
